INTRODUCTION
Welcome to TheCoffeeTable.co.uk, the online resource for coffee tables.
As well as being a showcase for the hand finished, custom made, wooden coffee tables, cabinets, and other furniture produced at my workshops, this site also contains pages explaining the design and construction process involved in making a wooden coffee table. These pages have been provided as an aid to students, or for those who wish to embark on the project of making a table for themselves.
In addition to this, the site also contains a page,
unique on
the web, describing the origins and development
of the coffee table.
The
current entry in Wikipedia for the 'origins of the coffee table' is
based on this page being a shortened version of it.

THE COFFEE TABLES
At my workshop
in
Hampshire I produce, to individual specification, hand crafted wooden
coffee tables in selected prime European oak and other hardwoods.
Each
coffee table is to my original design, made with traditional mortise
and tenon joints, and is signed and dated on the underside.
They are
hand finished in shellac and antique wax or with a water based lacquer.
On
this web site you will find examples of coffee tables in English and
European oak with tops made from selected quarter sawn timber which has
beautiful
silver figure or 'flower' as it is sometimes known where the cut has
revealed the medullary rays.
Also featured are American white oak
coffee tables.
The
planks of this timber which are imported to Britain are rarely quarter
sawn but the timber is lighter than English oak and does have an
attractive grain.
There are
also several European oak coffee tables, some of which have drawers and
shelves underneath for added
storage, from a range of countries in
Europe such as France, Bosnia, and Croatia.
If you are looking for a
coffee table with a rich mellow
finish, American red cherry is an ideal choice offering a natural warm
finish and an unusual colour.
One of the more popular choices for
modern style coffee
tables is American hard maple as it is a very light coloured wood and
you will find some examples on these pages, but a modern coffee table
in oak or beech can look just as stylish.
I make coffee tables in
traditional styles with hand turned legs which compliment rooms in
older properties, and also in contemporary and modern styles to suit
contemporary surroundings.
I also design my own completely original
styles of coffee tables.
Beech, a much underrated wood, which has a
wonderful flecked figure in the quarter sawn planks, is one timber
worth considering if you are looking for a coffee table in a light
wood. Whilst beech is normally almost white in colour, steamed beech
has a warm pinkish shade.
American
white ash is another light shaded wood, although the heartwood can
range from brown to green or red which to my mind makes it an excellent
timber to use for children’s furniture.
I have been producing quality custom made wooden coffee tables from my workshop for over 17 years, so why not give me a call and choose from the coffee table designs on this site, or ask for a quotation to have an originally designed wooden coffee table made to order.
